- Since 1996, participation in the festival depends on a jury's selection from those projects submitted at the CPTA (Contest of Amateur Theatre Projects). The call for entries is advertised during the first quarter of the year.
- Its programme offers performances aimed at adult and family audiences, as well as parallel activities (workshops, exhibitions, magazines...).
- Most performances take place at indoor venues, although some open-air concerts are scheduled.
- The growing popularity of the "Ciudad de Alicante" International Guitar Course means that it is now regarded as the benchmark for the guitar-based events held in Spain throughout the summer.
- Notable events in its yearly diary are the Open Air Theatre Festival in September, followed by the Contemporary Spanish Theatre Festival in November.
